Lightning Node Tips

Using Lightning with a phone app is child play. Just install and go (with Phoenix wallet for instance).

However, running your own Lightning node involves more investment in time, hardware, tweaking and daily maintenance.

After a year of fiddling with Lightning nodes, here are the few takeaways that helped me the most. I wished I knew those from the start.

– locate debug files and display them on the fly with tail -f
– install tailscale under Umbrel for fast secure connectivity (instead of Tor)
– keep the blockchain folder on an external SSD for easy replacement and keep a backup
– under Umbrel, learn to manually stop/start individual services
